Day 10: Peruvian Sexpots (pre-Columbian, of course)

On Day 10 Mr. Y and I decided it was time to get out and experience Lima. We were both rested from the day before and thought a museum would be a good idea. There were several within a reasonable cab ride from our hotel, but a coworker had kindly saved an article for me a few weeks before our trip that suggested one museum in particular as the museum to see if there is only time for one: Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera (Archeological Museum Rafael Larco Herrera), commonly referred to as the Larco Musum.

The Larco Museum, according to the article (and, silly me, I didn't do additional research beyond that), contains a collection of gold and silver pieces that rivals the Gold Museum's, and as much cultural anthropology details as the Museum of Cultural Anthropology. Most appealing to me is that the museum's vault, containing 45,000 additional pieces, is open for viewing. Most appealing to Mr. Y was the famed collection of pre-Columbian erotica. (For more information on this wonderful museum, here is a website with far better details than our little article: http://www.limaeasy.com/museums/museo_larco.php).

The museum's collection was breathtaking, from the incredible collection of gold and silver jewelry and ornaments...

to the pottery collection (note the expression on the face below--the Mochica were known for putting facial expressions in their pottery):
But my favorite thing about the museum was the collection of pottery that was not part of the exhibit--45,000 pieces of pottery that didn't make the main collection, but were just as interesting as the pieces in the collection:
Then, of course, there is what the Larco Museum is known for--erotic pottery.

Warning: If you are too young for sex, too old to be interested in sex, adverse to sex, offended by sex, or otherwise desire to not view sexual content (albeit, in pottery form), do NOT view this slide show! The Mochica held nothing back, and neither do I!
