Day 4: A Fortress By the Sea

The day after the wedding we were able to enjoy our first tour of Mayan ruins. A woman we talked to on the shuttle from the airport strongly recommended that we visit Tulum, and it was certainly impressive!

The Mayan culture is fascinating. Although these ruins were hundreds of years old, paint was still visible on some of the surfaces. The structures were not in nearly as as good a shape as the Incan ruins we saw last month, but were splended in their own right. Where the Incas were phenomenal stoneworkers with a great understanding of crops and seasons, the Mayas had writing, art, a calendar, mathematics and a superb understanding of astronomy. (For more information about the site, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulum.)

It was a little disturbing to see the surface where human sacrifices took place
the site itself was phenomenal
